An “awful” honeymoon

And I say “awful” in the same way the old English poets did, meaning “full of awe,” or, in my case, full of awesome experiences.

There are so many things to rave about, but to list them all would be too long, and better told over dinner or coffee (to my friends--hint! hint!). So to sum up, here are the Top 5 reasons why this is a honeymoon I won’t forget:

#5: New Zealand’s scenery
New Zealand is G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S to the nth power! Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” did not exaggerate. We passed by many mountains, forests, seas and lakes, and while technically, when you’ve seen one mountain you’ve seen them all, such is certainly not the case in NZ. With every turn of my head, I almost always find a sight that takes my breath away. Am just not sure our pictures will do them justice, but consider them a sneak preview of the real thing.

TRIVIA: The mountain range you see in the background of the pic below are called The Remarkables, and they were used to shoot the "Lighting of the Beacons" scene in LOTR's "Return of the King."

Oh, yeah, Australia wasn't so bad either.

This is a portion of Bond University, Eric's alma mater. Where students, adhering to Gold Coast dress code, go to class in shorts, slippers and tube tops. As Eric put it, if I had been one of his classmates here, "di kita papansinin."

#4: Soaking in a sulfuric spa
Rotorua in NZ is a hotbed of thermal activity, and the small of sulfur permeates all around. The smell wasn’t as noxious as I feared, although it still takes some getting used to. Bubbling mud pools and steaming geysers were the must-see's in this part of the trip. They may seem ho-hum when you read about them, but when you're really up close, it's an exciting experience. Nature never ceases to amaze me.

#3: Close encounters with the wild
I froze my ass off for one whole afternoon in the Otago Peninsula to see some of the world’s rarest animals in the wild.

Imagine hiking down this steep hill (with the gorgeous view that comes with cold, cold wind) to reach the beach below...

to view endangered species in their NATURAL HABITAT (how cool is that!!), like yellow-eyed penguins:

and Hooker seals.

After that, we climbed all the way back up the hill and then WENT DOWN THE OTHER SIDE to check out New Zealand fur seals. What a hectic activity, to the point that I actually got a fever that night. I say it’s because I got too cold but Eric insists it’s because I was too unfit for the hike and my body couldn’t take it, hmph. Still, that encounter still rates Grade A “Awesome” in my book.

#2: Uluru up close
I had always thought that seeing Ayers Rock (“Uluru” is the original name given to it by Australia’s aboriginal people) would be the highlight of my honeymoon, but that was eclipsed by "Awful" Experience #1 below (more on that later). Still, my visit to the Biggest Rock in the World definitely deserves special mention.

In the pic below, the line of people climbing up the rock in the background are those ignorant/disrepectful tourists who went ahead and climbed the rock anyway...

Despite this request from the aboriginal people.

And my #1 most Awful Experience…

I climbed a glacier!
When Eric and I first saw our itinerary for New Zealand, it included an “optional glacier climb.” We immediately knew this was an opportunity we would not pass up, and we were glad we went through with it. It was a grueling hike and really proved to me how un-agile I was. There were many times when I thought I would fall off the cliffs out of sheer exhaustion (and because those damn hiking boots were so heavy!), but I lived to tell the tale.

There are some things you will forever remember doing with the love of your life (the first kiss, the day you got married, etc.), but climbing a huge block of ice together is an experience entirely a league of its own.

And now we're back.

Next stop (hopefully), India!!!

First comes love, then comes marriage...

Then comes fixing up the house, unwrapping all the presents, deciding which things go to which drawers/cabinets, compromising on eveverything from mealtimes to the temperature of the a/c...

THESE are the things no one tells you about marriage.

So let's just say my first week has been totally unexpected.

I also didn't expect that I would miss my family and my house so much. My first few days, every little thing would remind me of home, and I would suddenly burst into tears. Good thing I had a friend who assured me I wasn't a freak by telling me that when during her first year of marriage, she felt so homesick that she would go home every day, giving all sorts of excuses to her in-laws.

Another thing I didn't expect -- I'm a Monica (of "Friends") at heart! I'm super OC, especially when it comes to our bedroom, and I hate it when Eric doesn't fix his things my way. Oh well, I have 50+ years to "train" him anyway.

We finished (finally!) unwrapping all our presents last night. For the record, the most number of items we received were coffee makers!! We got about 10 (out of 57), and 2 were of the exact same brand and model!

A close second were grillers (about 6), and we also got assorted beddings (from people who didn't even bother to ask what our bed's size is, so most of them we can't even use).

And the clincher--one person gifted us with 2 keychains!! A gift is a gift, I know, and it's the thought that counts, but keychains?!

These two gifts below we saved for last to open.

The wrappings were so pretty, we couldn't bear to tear them up. The smaller one is from my boss at Entrep, while the bigger box is from Eric's Thai friend, Ply.

Leaving for our honeymoon tomorrow! See you guys in a couple of weeks!

I miss my DSL!

Hey everyone! Can't blog about my first few days as a missus yet as my internet connection is currently via dial-up (Eric still doesn't know whether to get cable internet or dsl) and it takes forever to download a page. Plus, the clock is ticking, so I need to make this quick.

But I will be going back home on Friday to get my old things, which means I'll have access to unlimited DSL! Will make more chika then.

In the meantime, for those who want to see pics of my big day, check out Anndee's blog.

To paraphrase Avril

Why does everything have to be so damn complicated?!

***
Tamang-tama, I need to get my mind off all these wedding stuff. So thanks to Pao for this:
10 years ago I was...
Anxiously waiting for the results of my college entrance exams. UP had always been my first choice, and I had sworn that if I did not pass the UPCAT, I would just work my ass off at whatever school I passed and get myself transferred to UP. Luckily, I did not have to go through that.
5 years ago I was...
Working at Singapore Airlines, assisting spoiled VIPs and demanding media people. You know what they say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger?" Well, after what I went through with all those passengers, I can say I built enough character to be my own cartoon!
Yesterday...
Was trying to de-stress but still unsuccessful. Went to a chi-chi spa in Libis and found its reputation to be grossly overrated. At least now I know. Even worse: discovered a typo in my misalette and had another sort of row with my mom (but the row wasn't about the misalette).
The good news: was able to sleep early.
5 snacks I like...
Rosquillos. Oreos. Otap. Chicken empanada. Donuts!
5 things I would do w/ $100M...
Buy my family something pretty, travel, donate to worthy institutions, save the rest in the bank.
5 places I would run away to...
Any place where there's indoor plumbing, hot water, no cellphone signal, and--at this point--where my mom isn't there. And a constant cool breeze is a bonus.
5 things I would never wear...
Anything with shoulder pads, coats made of real animal fur, micro-minis,

5 favorite TV shows/entertainment...
CSI Las Vegas, Amazing Race, Friends, Smallville, Discovery Channel's "Air Crash Investigation"
5 bad habits...
Talking too fast, playing with my hair, reading the ending of a story before anything else, being too impulsive, being too "nice and diplomatic"
5 biggest joys...
Right now, only one thing would truly, absolutely make me happy--getting this wedding over and done with.
5 favorite toys...
(Nothing seems to come to mind right now.)
5 fictional characters I would date...
Wolverine, Gil Grissom, Jack Callaghan (of While You Were Sleeping), Cole Turner, and Vince Larkin (of Con Air)

5 people I tag to do this...
Anndee, Mari-An, John, JM and Moan (so you'll update your blog more often!) :)
