So I went and had my final fitting for my gown today. It's a poofy number with an even poofier petticoat.
And the question I'm asking myself now is: How the heck will I pee that day?!
***
In other news: I have a huge zit on my chin and it's stressing me out. Actually, it's a chicken-and-egg thing: when I get stressed, I get pimples;p but getting a pimple so close to D-Day is making me even more stressed. Gets?
***
I'm leaving my cellphone at home tomorrow afternoon and spending the time at the spa. I've asked my mom to go with me but so far, she's tinatamad and might just pass. To be honest, I wouldn't mind some alone time right about now.
***
It's ironic, when you think about it. I've been avoiding all other forms of social engagements the past week so I could spend more time with my family. But when I'm at home and constantly bombarded by my mom's neuroses, all I can think about is how much my life will be...quieter...once I move out. Am I a bad daughter?
***
I also really need to try getting more sleep. Lately, I've been going to bed no earlier than 1130pm, mostly because Eric and I are still finalizing a few details (which we can only do at 10pm tops, after he watches his chanel 2 teleseryes), and also because I just don't feel sleepy till around that time. Maybe it's the adrenaline. And even though I've on leave from work for the past few days, I still wake up at 630am. Maybe this is why I'm getting zits.
***
For the past few nights, I've also been nagging God to grant me 3 things on D-Day:
1) Good weather
2) That I don't bawl my eyes out at church (glistening tears out of the corner of my eyes are fine; sobbing my way to the altar--kill me first)
3) That I don't trip on my poofy gown
***
Good news though--my seating chart has been finalized!!! Let's just hope all our guests are cooperative that day.

The long wait is over

The 8th season of The Amazing Race (just about the best reality show EVER!!) premieres tomorrow morning, 10am (I think) on Studio 23. But there's a replay at 8pm on AXN, so to all my friends—DON'T CALL ME TOMORROW NIGHT, okay? :)

My mother-in-law just had our wedding rings engraved with our names and the wedding date.
That's it.

The one with Chandler and Monica
While binding, stapling, and putting ribbons on my wedding misalettes yesterday, I was able to finish watching Season 6 of Friends, which showed Chandler and Monica getting engaged at the end. I thought it was a fitting season ender, given that this is also the last Friends season I will be watching before I get married.

Naturally, I cried my eyes out when Chandler got down on his knees (yes, on both knees) and said:
Okay! Okay! Oh God, I thought… Wait a minute, I-I can do this. I thought that it mattered what I said or where I said it. Then I realized the only thing that matters is that you, you make me happier than I ever thought I could be. And if you’ll let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way. Monica, will you marry me?
Why are girls always suckers for these things?

Say what?
Had lunch with Eric and his mom the other day, at one of the lobby restaurants of the hotel where we'll be having the wedding reception.
It was a buffet spread, and for dessert, I had halo-halo.
The girl who prepared the halo-halo handed me a long, thin spoon that's commonly used for eating this kind of dessert. So I went back to our table and was happily mixing all the ice and condiments together when this Australian guy (Eric says he recognizes the accent) who's probably the restaurant manager or something appears at my side and hands me a big spoon, the kind used for eating the main course.
"For halo-halo, it's better to use the big spoon," he said, smiling.
"Oh, this was what they gave me. But thanks," I said. And as we exchanged spoons...
"A big spoon for a big girl," he said, still smiling, and left.
At first, I didn't want to put much thought into what he meant, but when Eric snickered, I knew even he was thinking what I was thinking.
Did that guy mean "big girl" as in he's talking about my size (which I really doubt)... or maybe he meant "big girl" as in "adult woman"? I really hope it's the latter.
"You should've stood up and asked him 'Who are you calling big?!'" I asked Eric with mock indignation. He just found it hilarious, and for most of the day yesterday, whenever we talked, he would find a way to call me a "big girl."
Am sure that guy meant "adult woman," what other reason could there be? Yeah, maybe that's how Aussies talk...

Pang-first dance sana
All this talk abour Renee Zellweger getting her marriage annulled has piqued my curiosity regarding her ex-husband-to-be, Kenny Chesney. I promptly started downloading his songs, and you know what, they're not bad.
But then again, I've always been a sucker for sappy love songs.
This is my favorite so far:
You Had Me From "Hello"
One word, that's all you said
Somethin' in your voice caused me to turn my head.
Your smile, just captured me
And you were in my future as far as I could see
And I don't know how it happened, but it happened still
You asked me if I love you, if I always will
Well you, had me from "Hello"
I felt love start to grow
The moment that I looked into your eyes, you won me
It was over from the start
You completely stole my heart
And now you won't let go
I never even had a chance you know
You had me from "Hello"
Inside, I built the walls
So high around my heart, I thought I'd never fall
One touch, you brought it down
The bricks of my defenses scattered on the ground
And I swore to me I wasn't gonna love againThe last time was the last time, I let someone in
But you, had me from "Hello"
I felt love start to grow
The moment that I looked into your eyes, you won me
It was over from the start
You completely stole my heart
And now you won't let go

Girl I've loved you from "Hello"
Email me if you want the mp3!

Caught between a rock and a hard place
That's where I am now.
And that's where (I think) I will often find myself once I get married.
Argh, why couldn't I have been married YESTERDAY?!
Then I wouldn't be feeling so shitty today.

Kilig excerpt

First, a summary:
Mel loves John. John loves Mel.
But Mel thinks John is a guy named Max...
Because the real Max called in a favor and told his buddy John to pretend to be him for awhile.
Overall, it's a funny story about attempted murder and mistaken identity, with a cute love story to match.
How cute? Check out this excerpt below:
[Note: The entire book/story is told via e-mails between the lead characters.]
[Note 2: "Nadine" is Mel's co-worker and best friend.
[Note 3: Even though he has to pretend to be Max, John/Max tells Mel that his nickname is "John." Which she naturally finds weird but...well, just read the book.]

Did he make that up? It means me, right? Don't you think? The "her" is me? Oh my God, I'm so excited. Nobody's ever sent me flowers at work before, let alone with a card that mentions the "L" word!!!

Don't just sit there grinning like an idiot. Write him back, for God's sake.

One more tip
Ladies, if ever the time comes when you're also on your way to getting married....
a word of advice:
Don't bother dieting.
Or at least don't diet too much.
Really, don't, because what everyone else says is true (and I'm vouching for it now).
Evern without meaning to, you WILL lose weight. A lot of weight, actually, especially in the last 3 months.
Like in my case.... lots of people are now telling me I'm too thin.
So now I'm trying to fatten myself up a bit. Although I hardly doubt I can do much, given it's only a few weeks left and I'm soooo stressed, I'm probably burning up everything I eat from thinking/planning/worrying too much.
So do yourselves a favor and don't sweat the weight thing.
And gentlemen/grooms-to-be... do your part: don't give your fiancees grief over their weight as well.
***
P.S. When we first checked for "lucky dates," the first date given to us was September 18. That's this Sunday! Imagine, there was a chance I would already be married this Sunday!
Good thing I'm not.
P.P.S Actually, on some level, I DO I wish I was getting married this weekend. Just so I can get the whole thing over and done with and start relaxing again.

If "Rain Man" were a book

I was so excited to finally have a copy of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time that I read it as soon as I got home—without even bothering to wrap it in plastic first. And that's saying a lot.
Our hero is 14-year-old Christopher, a math whiz who eats only red-colored foods (because he hates the colors yellor or brown) and screams when anyone touches him. That's because he's autistic, and the story is told from his own point of view.
When the neighbor's dog is found dead, Christopher takes it upon himself to investigate the murder and find out who did it. In the process, he will find himself embarking on an adventure that will have him discovering more about himself, and us cheering him on.
It's a surprisingly feel-good novel that I finished in less than a week, and rather that feel sorry for Christopher, I actually found myself envying him at certain times. Not that I want to be autistic, but there is something to be said for how Christopher's autism allows him to view the world logically and simply, and that's something I wish we all can just do.

Mom update
It was the National Wushu Championships.
Sponsored by the Wushu Federation of the Philippines.
My mom competed against 10 others in the 24-step Taijiquan category.
And she won first place.

I heart NY

Not the city (haven't been there yet so I really can't have an opinion), but the CSI spin-off.
I have always been a staunch fan of the original, and when the first spin-off (CSI: Miami) aired, I sat through a couple of episodes before concluding that nothing still beats Gil Grissom and his team. So when CSI:New York was launched, I didn't even bother to watch the pilot episode, thinking that it would be just as bad as Miami.
Last night, I was busy working in front of the computer but had the TV turned on to a rerun of CSI: Las Vegas. I was busy with work that I didn't really pay attention when the show ended and a rerun of CSI: New York started. I half-heartedly turned to watch, ready to turn the TV off after a few minutes, but before I knew it, I had finished the entire episode.
It's really good, not as good as Las Vegas but definitely better than Miami. And now I'm bummed that I didn't get to watch the series from the start, so I'm mentally debating whether I should ask my brother to buy me the DVD of the first season or just wait until they show more reruns on TV.

A lesson in gratitude
We are often told to be thankful for what we have, rather than whine about what we don't have.
To be honest, I sometimes find myself forgetting to do just that, and instead focus more on my "wants" than on the things I should be grateful for.
But after interviewing the owner of the Teriyaki Boy chain of restaurants this past week, I don't think I'll be feeling as "needy" as much anymore.
From August 30 to the end of October, the restaurant will donate 1 peso out of every customer's bill to a fund that will go to granting the wishes of 30 less fortunate kids.
I read the wishes and to say that I was touched is an understatement. Because these kids did not ask for "a house and lot." Or "a trip to Disneyland." Not even "One million pesos." Instead, one kid asked for "a pair of rubber shoes." Another one asked for "skirt, blouse, panties (panties!!!) and socks." One more asked to receive a computer, "just like the one I see on TV." And one asked for a TV, but not for himself...he wants it for his school.
And other equally simple things. One kid who is diagnosed with cancer wrote down as his wish--"to visit Manila Zoo." Another one who is equally gravely sick just asked that he be able to watch his favorite celebrity perform live. The only one who asked for money was the kid who asked for a measely P10,000... and only so that his parents "can open a sari-sari store."
Teriyaki Boy's original intention was for the customers to vote on the wishes, and only one winning wish would be fulfilled. But after seeing how simple the requests were, they said they would fulfill ALL of them; whatever amount they can gather from their customers, they'll add on it to be able to make all the wishes come true.
So eat at Teriyaki Boy when you can; or sponsor one of the wishes yourselves (which is one customer did--he flat out gave one of the branch managers the money to buy that one kid his rubber shoes.) And the next time you find yourself complaining that you don't have the latest cellphone, or annoyed that you have yet to own the latest fashion fad.... just think about the kid who can't even afford to buy new underwear....and be thankful.

Masters of the guilt trip
My parents, that's who.
And unlike my brothers, who can just ignore them without feeling a shred of guilt, I'm a sucker when my parents start laying it on.
Especially now that I'm so close to moving out, I feel like I owe it to them to spend as much time or do as much things for them as possible.
But I'm putting my foot down this time, I swear.
See, my mom is competing this weekend in the National Wushu/Tai-chi/Qi Gong/Whatever (actually, am really not sure). Okay, so it's not the SEA Games or the Olympics but it's a competition nonetheless and my mom has been training really hard for it.
I'd go and watch to show my support, I really would, except it's at seven in the freaking morning.
And at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, which means we have to leave the house before 6am if we want to make it with time to spare... which means I need to wake up at around 5am.
I know I wrote before that I'm a morning person, but I've been working so hard this whole week, I was really planning to sleep in this weekend.
Enter my dad: (when he found out me and my brothers weren't going to watch my mom) "Hey, everytime you kids had a violin recital before, your mom and I always went to watch."
I was so tempted to retort that our violin recitals weren't held at seven in the morning, but I just shut up. I think I've said this about my parents before—any retort in that line of thought is tantamount to answering back for them, and I really am not in the condition to listen to another sermon about "respect" and "gratitude."
So screw it, am waking up late tomorrow and Sunday.

I am craving
For an out-of-town trip.

Baguio.
Kahit Batangas, ok lang.
Somewhere where I'm not perpetually reminded of work.
Or wedding plans.
Road trip, anyone?

I met a guy yesterday who is now officially my cutest interviewee since.... forever! He's smart, successful, funny and—the clincher—looks like Russell Wong! Check out the November issue of Entrepreneur, you'll know who I'm talking about.
***
"He's so cute!" I squealed to Eric last night. "And the amazing thing is, he says he's 36 years old but I swear, he looks 29!"
ERIC: Is he married?
ME: That's what I don't know yet. But he wasn't wearing a ring. Plus when I asked him what a day in his life was like, he didn't say anything about 'spending time with the wife and kids' or 'with the girlfriend.' He just says he ends his days by working out.
ERIC: He's probably gay.
***
Funnily, my co-worker, who was also with me when we met Mr. Cutest Interviewee Ever, was absolutely mortified when I texted Eric right after the interview to gush about the guy. "Won't he get mad? Or jealous?" she asked worriedly, as if expecting that Eric would call off the wedding just like that.
"No," I laugh. "It's just a crush, it's not as if I want to leave Eric for him."
And that prompted her to spend the rest of the day asking me and our photographer (who's happily married as well) what the difference is between a normal "crush" and a crush that's tantamount to infidelity.
***
Personally, I think it becomes more than just a crush if you start going out of your way to make something more happen out of the original relationship. Like in my case, I don't think there's anything wrong with posting a polaroid I have of Mr. Crush on my corkboard, but if I start texting him things like, "Hi, hope you have a nice day today," out of the blue, then that's already pushing it in another direction.
Or maybe if you start finding more fault in your partner and you begin to wish he was like Mr. Crush instead. No one's perfect, of course, and you'll often find a quality or trait in someone else that you wish your boyfriend has. But once you start resenting your boyfriend for what he doesn't have, and begin daydreaming about how perfect your life would be with the other guy, then that's a warning sign as well.
But I think the best gauge if you're going too far would be to ask yourself: If my boyfriend were doing to another girl what I'm doing to this guy right now, how would I feel?
I guess the answer to that would also depend on the kind of relationship you both have (maybe you're more open than other couples), but it's still a good gauge nonetheless.
What do you guys think?
***
Now, what about "flirting"? When is it okay to flirt, and when does it become dangerous? Now that deserves another post altogether, but feel free to tell me what you think as well. Am off tomeet more cute guys do another round of interviews. Bye!

Now, what about "flirting"? When is it okay to flirt, and when does it become dangerous? Now that deserves another post altogether, but feel free to tell me what you think as well. Am off to

I want to go to superhero school!!

When I first saw the trailer, I dismissed Sky High as one of those inane superhero movies with pansy villains and even pansier heroes.
But the reviews were pretty good, plus it got a thumbs-up from my brother, so Eric and I decided to watch it this afternoon (it was either that or The Cave).
And yes, we were pleasantly surprised to find out it was really good. The casting was perfect--everyone fit their role to a T--and so was the chemistry. There were the usual cheesy lines about heroism and bravery, but the script was funny and sometimes even insightful. And the special were "wow" without being over the top.
I think the makers of X-Men 3 should ask for advice from Disney on how to make a cool superhero film.

Can't wait for the day to be over
Am so not in the mood to work (or do anything, for that matter) today. For one thing, it's a Friday, and for another, I just feel so damn sluggish and sleepy. I think it's because last night was the 3rd night in a row that I went to sleep past midnight.
Tuesday night-- came home late from work
Wednesday night-- stayed up late to do some stupid, useless Chinese wedding tradition stuff that my mom nagged me into doing
Last night-- watched reruns of Sex and the City on HBO
Call me weird but I've never really been a night person--usually by 1030pm...11pm tops.. I already start feeling light-headed. But wake me up at 5am and I'll be raring to go.
Eric, of course, is the total opposite. He sleeps no earlier than 1am and can be REALLY CRABBY in the morning. I wonder whose body clock will adjust to whom once we start to live together?
Anyway, tonight, I'll be sleeping late again because it's my bridal shower! Now that's something to help me get through today.

I don't get it.... oh, wait, yes I do
At my former department, I can put together a major shoot with less than a day's notice, despite having to work around the availability of models, photographers, make-up artists, stylists, etc.
Here at Entrep, I can pin down appointments for interviews and shoots with busy, busy, busy businessmen via text messaging in less than an hour.
So why, oh why, can't my wedding be as easy to put together...considering I had MORE THAN A YEAR to prepare?
Oh, wait, I know why.... because this time, parents are involved.

Goods news, sad news
How can news be both good AND sad? Here's how....
First, the good news: there's an upcoming loooooong holiday in October-November
October 29 Saturday
October 30 Sunday
October 31 Monday (Sandwiched by two non-working days and as per GMA's Proclamation No. 839 under SECTION 1, a special non-working day throughout the country.)
November 1 All Saints Day
November 2 All Souls Day (Not yet sure if it will be declared a holiday)
November 3 Eidl Feitre (Last day of Ramadan, which, officially, is a legal holiday)
November 4 Friday (Working day)
November 5 Saturday
November 6 Sunday
Now the sad news: Normally, the minute I hear such news, I start planning for an out-of-town trip with my family. Usually we go to Baguio. But I'll already be married by then, so I can't do that anymore, or at least not this soon. Sigh. So I told my brother that it's all up to him this time.
And I'll just stay at home and play house with Eric.
Hmm, wait, on second thought... that's not such a bad thing....
