To climb or not to climb

One of the things I'm looking forward to in our honeymoon is seeing—and climbing—Ayer's Rock.



It's the largest rock in the world, and sacred to the aborigines.

Which brings me to my problem. I just found out from researching on the net that the aborigines view the rock as a shrine, and to climb it is deemed sacrilegious. Not that they have any choice—when the white Australian government have custody of the rock back to them many years ago, one of the provisions is that they have to allow toursist to climb it. So now the aborigines are just "requesting" tourists to respect their holy place, but if people really want to traipse all over it, well, they'll be "sport" enough to act as guides.

An alternative is to just walk around the base of the rock, but to be honest, that's kinda...corny.

There's also the issue of whether or not I'll eat kangaroo meat (it's included in one of the packaged dinners), but that's another story...
