A little something on "Sugo"

Caught the premiere of Sugo, GMA-7's newest action-fantaserye last night.

Thumbs up: Plus points to GMA for once again being innovative and creative in their TV shows. Story was very fast-paced. I expected it to be like all the other teleseryes where the first week features child stars playing the younger versions of the leads. Good thing there was none of that here.

Thumbs down: As always, the problem with most of our local TV shows (and even films) is casting. Obviously, Richard Guttierez was cast in the title role because he's today's hottest actor. Never mind if his acting is more wooden than my corkboard. And when he tries to look grim and morose, he just looks...constipated.

And what's this about Jestoni Alarcon and Ariel Rivera playing brothers? Jestoni is very mestizo, while Ariel is as kayumanggi as can be. And Jestoni and Lorna Tolentino as lovers? Yeah, that's just credible.

But last night was just the first episode, so it's too early to make any conclusions. Either way, the show looks promising. I think the people behind ABS-CBN's Panday will have to haul ass if they hope to beat Sugo in the ratings.
